As part of the site visit to the French Embassy in Doha, the project management team had the opportunity to discover one of the project’s emblematic technical systems: the Canadian well system, implemented to pre-cool the fresh air used for building ventilation. The installations provide improved thermal comfort while limiting energy consumption.
While outdoor temperatures reach around 48°C, this passive system lowers the air temperature to 42°C before treatment, thanks to heat exchange with the ground, which remains stable at around 40°C at a depth of 2 meters.
Two independent networks have been designed:
Embassy: air flow rate of 8,015 m³/h, equivalent to approximately 11.7 kW of thermal energy transferred
Ambassador’s Residence: air flow rate of 6,475 m³/h, equivalent to 9.6 kW of thermal energy
The lengths of the buried pipes have been deliberately oversized — 129 m and 135 m respectively — to ensure a safety margin and optimal system performance (controlled velocity, low pressure losses, steady flow).
A simple, robust, and durable solution to meet Qatar’s climatic demands… with common sense and restraint.
