13 Oct French Embassy in Qatar: Construction Progress Continues
Construction work on the French Embassy in Qatar continues to progress, with several key milestones achieved in recent weeks.
In the staff accommodation buildings, the installation of wood-fibre insulation is currently underway. The glass-fibre-reinforced concrete (GRC) cladding in the courtyards of the staff accommodation buildings has now been installed, while the joinery is gradually being fitted. The buildings are now weather-tight, allowing site meetings to be held indoors in suitable conditions.
Particular attention has been paid to the thermal comfort of the spaces, with various solutions implemented to suit Qatar’s climate. The staff accommodation buildings now offer comfortable indoor conditions despite the high outdoor temperatures.
On the Chancellery and the Ambassador’s Official Residence, 1.50-metre-long galvanised steel gargoyles have been installed on the south-facing walls. The stone cladding on both the Official Residence and the Private Residence has also been installed, gradually bringing the project’s architectural identity to life.
Landscaping works are progressing as well, with the foundations for the filtration basins now almost entirely poured. In addition, all the plants selected for the gardens have been carefully chosen to suit the site’s characteristics and local climatic conditions.
These various interventions are gradually bringing the project to its final form, combining material expression, thermal comfort and landscape integration. The planting scheme has now been finalised, featuring more than 35 species carefully selected for their suitability to desert conditions, including the tropical almond (Terminalia catappa), dwarf fan palm (Chamaerops humilis), orchid tree (Bauhinia sp.), wedelia (Sphagneticola trilobata) and purple fountain grass (Cenchrus setaceus ‘Rubrum’).
